SUMMARY:Professional Development Webinar: Working with Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries: A Perspective from a Peer and a Provider with Psychiatric Comorbidities
DESCRIPTION:Working with Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries: A Perspective from a Peer and a Provider with Psychiatric Comorbidities\nDrawing on personal experience with a severe TBI and the psychiatric comorbidities that often accompany it\, this presentation offers a unique look at traumatic brain injury from both sides of the table: the survivor and the provider. \nThe session will explore what individuals can expect in treatment\, the challenges that commonly arise\, and the therapeutic approaches that can support recovery. With a blend of lived insight and professional perspective\, it highlights practical strategies\, psychotherapies used in TBI care\, and a personal approach that proved effective and may offer guidance for others on the same path. \nThis webinar is free to attend. However\, if you’d like to receive CEUS or a certificate of completion\, there will be a $10 fee. \n\nDuring this session\, the thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the presenter and do not reflect the opinions and beliefs of the Brain Injury Association of New York State. \n\nAbout the presenter: \nKurt Warner has spent more than 13 years working in OASAS and OMH housing programs\, supporting individuals with what were then classified as Axis I chemical dependency and mental health diagnoses. For nearly four years\, he has continued this work as a therapist\, serving people living with traumatic brain injuries\, mental health conditions\, and chemical dependency. \nKurt also brings the insight of lived experience. He is a survivor of a severe traumatic brain injury that left a significant portion of his brain missing and required him to relearn walking and speaking after a forced cerebellar stroke. He manages comorbid bipolar disorder and OCD\, giving him a dual perspective as both professional and consumer. \nThis combination of experience\, resilience\, and a steady respect for time-tested practices shapes Kurt’s work and the support he offers others on their own path forward. \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS CLOSED.\nBIANYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s Office of the Professions as a provider for continuing competencies in the following areas: Social Work (#0539)\, Physical Therapy/ PT Assistants\, Speech-Language Pathologist & Audiologists\, and Occupational Therapy/OT assistants.  CBIS continuing education credit and Certificates of Attendance are also available. \nThe Brain Injury Association of New York State thanks Siegel & Coonerty LLP for their support in underwriting the Professional Development Webinar Series.
