SUMMARY:Implementing Early Caregiver Education into the Inpatient Brain Injury Program
DESCRIPTION:Professional Development Webinar Series: Implementing Early Caregiver Education into the Inpatient Brain Injury Program\nProgram Description:\n\nCaregiver education is an important factor in any inpatient rehabilitation program\, especially within a brain injury program. Because brain injuries occur suddenly\, family members are often not prepared to assume caregiver roles at discharge.\n\nThe Sunnyview Rehabilitation Brain Injury Team prioritizes interdisciplinary early caregiver education to prepare families to care for their loved ones. This consists of in person or virtual education sessions and in person\, hands-on training. Their goal is to give families and caregivers the tools and education they need to feel empowered to safely care for their loved one at home. \nDuring this presentation\, effective processes and timelines for implementing caregiver education will be explored\, including communication techniques\, examples of education handouts\, and current evidence for best practice. \nAbout the Presenters: \n\n\nEmily Steenburgh\, MS OTR/L\, CBIS\, ATP is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist and Assistive Technology Professional. She has been employed as an occupational therapist at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital in the brain injury unit since 2015. \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \nRebecca Grondin\, MS\, OTR/L has been an occupational therapist for seven years. She has worked across the inpatient and outpatient settings\, primarily within the neurologic populations. Rebecca was team leader of the brain injury unit at Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital for the last three years\, and is now a per diem therapist at Sunnyview and St. Peter’s Hospital. \n  \n\n\nRegistration for this event has closed.\n\nBIANYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s Office of the Professions as a provider for continuing competencies in the following areas: Social Work (#0539)\, Physical Therapy/ PT Assistants\, Speech-Language Pathologist & Audiologists\, Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) and Occupational Therapy/ OT assistants.  We also provide CBIS continuing education credit and Certificates of Attendance. \nThe Brain Injury Association of New York State thanks our Professional Development Series Presenting Sponsor\, Harding Mazzotti\, LLP\, for their support in underwriting this program.

She completed the National Institutes of Health Clinical Research Training Program\, a residency at Northwestern University’s Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) and a fellowship at Harvard University’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. She joined the staff at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital to lead the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program. SUMMARY:Screen Time: Essential or Detrimental to the Child Recovering from TBI?
DESCRIPTION:  \nProgram Description: \nAdvances in technology and the shift in our culture due to the pandemic have led to an increased reliance on computers/smartphones more than ever before. While the use of various apps and programs can facilitate TBI recovery via compensatory strategies and drills\, what does this increased amount of screen time truly mean for a recovering brain? Recent research suggests the increased likelihood of executive function impairment for children born prematurely who experience excessive screen time in their toddler years\, but is there a similar implication for children recovering from a brain injury? This course will discuss the research regarding screen time as it relates to children recovering from TBI and make recommendations regarding how caregivers and service providers can effectively facilitate a positive balance between screen time and a healing brain. \nAbout the Presenter: \n \nLauren Holland\, MS CCC-SLP\, holds a B.A. from Nazareth College and an M.A. in Speech Pathology from Boston University. She has spent her career working at the Golisano Restorative Neurology and Rehabilitation Unit\, an inpatient rehab\, specializing in stroke and traumatic brain injury for all ages. Lauren is also a participant on the pediatric committee which specializes in ongoing development and improvements related to the care of pediatric patients. In addition to her clinical experience\, Lauren has had the opportunity to teach at the graduate level and coordinate graduate student experiences within her health system. \n  \n\n \nBIANYS is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s Office of the Professions as a provider for continuing competencies in the following areas: Social Work (#0539)\, Physical Therapy/ PT Assistants\, Speech-Language Pathologist & Audiologists\, Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) and Occupational Therapy/ OT assistants.  We also provide CBIS continuing education credit and Certificates of Attendance. \nThe Brain Injury Association of New York State thanks our Professional Development Series Presenting Sponsor\, Goldblatt and Associates\, for their support in underwriting this program.
