DESCRIPTION:The (Lack of) Evidence Supporting the Use of Neurostimulants in Brain Injury Rehabilitation\nPresented by: Heather M. Ma\, MD MS FAAPMR\, Assistant Professor at University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital\nThere are multiple different medications that can be used to accelerate the rate of a person’s recovery after brain injury. This is a comprehensive review of the medications usually considered and the evidence supporting their use. It highlights indications\, both FDA-approved and off-label uses\, as well as the (often limited) scientific evidence supporting their use. \nDuring this session\, the thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the presenter and do not reflect the opinions and beliefs of the Brain Injury Association of New York State. \nAbout the Presenter:\nAs a physiatrist (physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)\, with subspecialty certification in Brain Injury Rehabilitation Medicine\, Heather M. Ma\, MD MS FAAPMR\, believes in taking a comprehensive approach to helping each patient achieve the best recovery possible following a brain injury. Treatment approaches may include the use of medications\, nutrition\, therapies\, counseling\, procedures\, and the involvement of other specialists. \nDr. Ma earned her medical degree at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed the National Institutes of Health Clinical Research Training Program\, a residency at Northwestern University’s Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) and a fellowship at Harvard University’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. She joined the staff at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital to lead the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program. Dr. Ma’s goal is to provide outstanding patient-centered care\, which includes educational opportunities for all learners\, and explores novel interventions and therapeutics to accelerate recovery for patients. \nThe Brain Injury Association of New York State is recognized by the New York State Education Department of the Professions as approved providers of continuing education for the following professions:  Physical Therapy and Physical Therapy Assistants\, Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists\, CTLE\, Social Work\, Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy assistants and Licensed Psychologists. SUMMARY:Screen Time: Essential or Detrimental to the Child Recovering from TBI?
DESCRIPTION:  \nProgram Description: \nAdvances in technology and the shift in our culture due to the pandemic have led to an increased reliance on computers/smartphones more than ever before. While the use of various apps and programs can facilitate TBI recovery via compensatory strategies and drills\, what does this increased amount of screen time truly mean for a recovering brain? Recent research suggests the increased likelihood of executive function impairment for children born prematurely who experience excessive screen time in their toddler years\, but is there a similar implication for children recovering from a brain injury? This course will discuss the research regarding screen time as it relates to children recovering from TBI and make recommendations regarding how caregivers and service providers can effectively facilitate a positive balance between screen time and a healing brain. \nAbout the Presenter: \n \nLauren Holland\, MS CCC-SLP\, holds a B.A. from Nazareth College and an M.A. in Speech Pathology from Boston University. She has spent her career working at the Golisano Restorative Neurology and Rehabilitation Unit\, an inpatient rehab\, specializing in stroke and traumatic brain injury for all ages. Lauren is also a participant on the pediatric committee which specializes in ongoing development and improvements related to the care of pediatric patients. SUMMARY:Cognitive and Psychological Outcomes After COVID-19: A New Population of Brain Injury Survivors
DESCRIPTION:Program Description: This presentation will address cognitive sequelae of covid 19 including delirium syndromes\, but also stroke\, and hypoxic injuries as well as potential mechanisms of these acute and chronic brain injuries\, longer-term outcomes (as they become available) and explore how we adapt traditional brain injury evaluations and treatment for this special population. \nAbout the Presenters: \nJulieanne Shulman\, Psy.D.\, Chief\, Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology\, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital/Montefiore Medical Center\, received her B.A. in psychology from the University of Rochester and her M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School. She completed an APA accredited internship at the Rusk Institute/NYU Langone Medical Center\, where she focused on neuropsychology\, cognitive remediation and psychotherapy with a medically complex patient population. Dr. Shulman went on to further specialize in neuropsychology with children\, adolescents and adults during her post-doctoral training. Prior to becoming Chief of Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology at Burke Rehabilitation Center/Montefiore Health System\, she served as the Coordinator for the Neuropsychology Service at the New York State Psychiatric Institute where she was appointed Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology in Psychiatry at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. She currently oversees the Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology Service at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital/Montefiore Medical Center where she also co-directs the psychology externship training program.  Dr. Shulman serves as an Assistant Professor in the Arthur S. Abramson Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Shulman brings a strong background in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to her work\, applying the latest\, research-based advances in her treatment of patients with a variety of adjustment\, anxiety and mood disorders. \n Jamie Twaite\, Ph.D.\, Burke Rehabilitation Hospital/Montefiore Medical Center\, received her B.A. in biology from Bard College\, her M.A. in psychology from Teacher’s College\, Columbia University\, and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with Neuropsychology Emphasis from the City University of New York\, Queens College. She completed an APA accredited\, neuropsychology-focused internship at Henry Ford Hospital\, which included further specialized training in epilepsy\, movement disorders\, and sports concussion management. Afterward\, she completed a two-year neuropsychology fellowship at the Institute of Living and Hartford Hospital\, emphasizing the assessment of acute and chronic stroke and neurologic conditions\, memory disorders\, and psychiatric illness. She is currently a clinical neuropsychologist at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital/Montefiore Medical Center and serves as the Director of the Neuropsychology Externship Program and co-director of the Concussion service. She is also appointed as Assistant Professor in the Arthur S. Abramson Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. SUMMARY:Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of Brain Injury - Professional Development Series Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Program Description: After brain injury\, the primary focus is often on the physical repercussions. This presentation will emphasize the cognitive\, behavioral and emotional symptoms of brain injury\, which are sometimes the more difficult symptoms to cope with. Additionally\, the neurobiological underpinnings of these symptoms\, how they may present in patients with brain injury and how to best respond to and manage these patients will be covered. \nAbout the Presenter:\nLynn Schaefer\, Ph.D.\, ABPP-CN\, is Director of Neuropsychology at Nassau University Medical Center. She holds academic appointments as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Rehabilitation and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer with the Brain Injury Association of America. SUMMARY:Management Approach for Visual Vestibular Symptoms - Professional Development Series Webinar
DESCRIPTION:  \nProgram Description: Following acquired brain injury (ABI)\, including traumatic brain injury (TBI)\, concussion and stroke\, vision may be impacted. This presentation will discuss the criteria for detailed vision evaluation and management\, aspects of vision rehabilitation and the types of vision rehabilitation providers\, as well as typical sensorimotor vision problems\, such as deficits of light-dark adaptation\, accommodation\, saccades\, vergence\, visual processing and visual-vestibular interaction\, with the underlying neurology\, primary associated vision symptom and possible treatment approaches. A paradigm with tailored sequencing of home-based vision rehabilitation will also be provided. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \n \nNeera Kapoor\, OD\, MS\, completed her research and clinical training in the mid-1990s at SUNY College of Optometry\, where she remained on faculty through spring 2016. In 2016\, she joined NYU School of Medicine\, where she holds the rank of Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Kapoor also provides clinical care as a neuro-optometrist at NYU Langone Health’s RUSK Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. DESCRIPTION:  \nProgram Description: Veterans with TBI often face other than honorable discharge for behaviors stemming from their injury. Without an honorable discharge status\, these former service members may be unable to receive vital veteran benefits. This presentation will discuss some of the problems faced by veterans with TBI and will provide information on how they can apply for a discharge status upgrade through the US Department of Defense\, the character of discharge upgrades\, and the New York State Restoration of Honor Act. \nIn recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month\, this webinar is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \n \nAmanda B. Pearlstein\, Esq. is an attorney at Disability Rights New York (DRNY)\, the protection and advocacy agency for people with disabilities in New York State. Amanda provides legal and advocacy services to individuals with TBI in areas including employment\, housing\, and access to community services. She also manages complex disability rights lawsuits\, including Hernandez v.
