DESCRIPTION:The (Lack of) Evidence Supporting the Use of Neurostimulants in Brain Injury Rehabilitation\nPresented by: Heather M. Ma\, MD MS FAAPMR\, Assistant Professor at University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital\nThere are multiple different medications that can be used to accelerate the rate of a person’s recovery after brain injury. This is a comprehensive review of the medications usually considered and the evidence supporting their use. It highlights indications\, both FDA-approved and off-label uses\, as well as the (often limited) scientific evidence supporting their use. \nDuring this session\, the thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the presenter and do not reflect the opinions and beliefs of the Brain Injury Association of New York State. \nAbout the Presenter:\nAs a physiatrist (physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)\, with subspecialty certification in Brain Injury Rehabilitation Medicine\, Heather M. Ma\, MD MS FAAPMR\, believes in taking a comprehensive approach to helping each patient achieve the best recovery possible following a brain injury. Treatment approaches may include the use of medications\, nutrition\, therapies\, counseling\, procedures\, and the involvement of other specialists. \nDr. Ma earned her medical degree at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed the National Institutes of Health Clinical Research Training Program\, a residency at Northwestern University’s Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (now the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) and a fellowship at Harvard University’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. She joined the staff at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital to lead the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program. Dr. Ma’s goal is to provide outstanding patient-centered care\, which includes educational opportunities for all learners\, and explores novel interventions and therapeutics to accelerate recovery for patients. \nThe Brain Injury Association of New York State is recognized by the New York State Education Department of the Professions as approved providers of continuing education for the following professions:  Physical Therapy and Physical Therapy Assistants\, Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists\, CTLE\, Social Work\, Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy assistants and Licensed Psychologists.
