Exercise and Concussion Recovery
Description
The audience will learn how to use the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test and sub-symptom threshold aerobic exercise to speed recovery from sport-related concussion and to treat those with prolonged post-concussive symptoms.
Presenter
John Leddy, MD
Dr. Leddy is the Professor of Clinical Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and of the American College of Physicians, and Director of Outcomes Research for the Department of Orthopedics. He is a Member of the Expert Panel for the Berlin Fifth International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport and a consultant to the NIH on sport concussion research. In conjunction with Dr. Barry Willer, he developed the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test.
Objectives
Attendees will learn how to use the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) to:
Help diagnose a concussion
Inform prognosis
Aid in the differential diagnosis of persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS)
Treat acute concussion and PPCS
Guidelines for Return to School and Physical Activity after Concussion
Description
This presentation will allow participants to describe guiding principles for a gradual return to school and other activities of daily living, such as physical activity after a concussion.

Julia Drattell, MEd, ATC, CES
Julia is a certified athletic trainer, trained at the University of Delaware, followed by receiving a master’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Virginia. After covering Division I and Division III collegiate athletics in the New York City area for six years, she transitioned to the Hospital Administration setting at the NYU Langone Health Concussion Center. In her role, she is responsible for advancing clinical programming, supporting ongoing research, and developing relationships and educational programs for the community and healthcare professionals.
Objectives
Attendees will:
Discuss the guiding principles for gradual reintroduction to cognitive and physical activity
Identify potential modifications to assist with returning a patient to the school environment and cognitive activity
Describe the progressive return to physical activity, including organized sports
