Description
The primary focus after a brain injury is often on the physical repercussions. This presentation will emphasize the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional symptoms of brain injury, which are sometimes the more difficult symptoms with which to cope. It will review the neurobiological underpinnings of these symptoms, how they may present in patients with brain injury, and how best to respond to and manage these patients.

Dr. Lynn Schaefer is Director of Neuropsychology at Nassau University Medical Center. She holds academic appointments as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Rehabilitation and is a Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer with the Brain Injury Association of America.
Objectives
Attendees of this presentation will:
Identify specific brain areas that are affected by traumatic brain injury
Describe primary and secondary effects of closed versus open head injury
Explain how damage to different regions of the prefrontal cortex correspond to various cognitive and/or behavioral sequelae
List some strategies for managing agitation and other behavioral problems following brain injury
