A person’s ability to make decisions on their own behalf is generally assumed, unless affected by brain injury or illness. This presentation will explain what decision-making capacity is, focusing on important ethical and legal ideas. It will cover the potential causes of incapacity and how it is determined clinically. Practical steps to support, optimize, or restore decision-making ability will also be introduced. Real-life examples will be used to highlight challenges for families and different types of decision-making in various situations.

This presentation will:

  • Provide an awareness and understanding of key concepts and terminology used in decision-making capacity.
  • Identify some techniques used to assess decisional capacity and accommodations to maximize capacity.
  • Describe some ethical dilemmas that can arise before, during, and after evaluation of decision-making capacity.

This webinar is free to attend. However, if you’d like to receive CEUS or a certificate of completion, there will be a $10 fee.
