The past year has left a lasting impression on us all.

The Brain Injury Association of New York State was able to continue to be there for the people that needed us. We can’t continue to be there without your support.

The Banfield sisters had an unbreakable bond – Jira, the younger, is a creative and carefree spirit and Mumbi who had an effervescent zeal for life, was an officer with the NYPD. While on vacation, Mumbi was in a tragic accident, leaving her in a coma, with broken bones and Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI). Jira, Mumbi’s only caregiver, was left to navigate an unfamiliar system.

Desperate and planning to bring Mumbi home to her small New York City apartment with no supports, Jira found us. With the help of BIANYS, Mumbi was admitted to an acute rehabilitation facility in New York City, where she received care in OT, PT and speech. At last, Jira saw a difference in her sister. For the first time since the accident, she was able to communicate with Mumbi.

Since Mumbi’s discharge, BIANYS still plays a role in helping Jira, guiding her as she seeks legal assistance, accessing the New York State TBI Medicaid Waiver and making her apartment accessible for Mumbi’s needs.

Your support helps people like Jira and Mumbi. We were there for them. Will you be here for us?
