Description
In addition to encouraging participants to broaden the definition of loss to include events beyond those involving a death, this session will identify factors that influence reactions to loss. Common myths about grief will be identified and strategies for coping with loss will be described.
Presenter
Carla Sofka, Ph.D.
Dr. Sofka is a professor of Social Work at Siena College in Latham, NY. During her social work career, she worked in medical, mental health, and hospice settings. She became a social work educator in 1993 and has taught Introduction to Social Welfare and Social Work, various practice courses, research methods, and elective courses on death and dying and mental health. Areas of research include the use of technology in death education and grief counseling as well as how museums serve as healing spaces.
