2016 TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Running Program Now Open

Nearly $200 million has been raised by runners through the charity partner program since its inception a decade ago, including $33.9 million by 8,700 charity runners during 2015 TCS New York City Marathon

New York, March 9, 2016—The 2016 TCS New York City Marathon charity running program has opened for the 46th edition of the world’s largest marathon, continuing a 10-year tradition with New York Road Runners that has raised nearly $200 million for hundreds of causes. Runners can now sign up with one of over 340 official charity partners who use the marathon as a critical fundraising initiative.
“We are so thankful for the thousands of inspirational charity runners who raise money for hundreds of worthy causes through their participation in the TCS New York City Marathon,” said Michael Capiraso, president and CEO of New York Road Runners. “Over the past 10 years, nearly $200 million has been raised by runners through our official charity partner program, including an amazing $33.9 million at last year’s race, which is a tribute to the incredible generosity and compassion of the running community.”
“Of the 50,000 people who run the streets of New York City’s five boroughs every year at the TCS New York City Marathon, our charity runners make one of the biggest impacts,” said Peter Ciaccia, president of events for New York Road Runners and race director of the TCS New York City Marathon. “The marathon is a personal journey for everyone who participates and it’s inspiring to have such an amazing group of runners share their experience with so many important charities.”

In 2015, 8,700 charity runners raised $33.9 million during the marathon on behalf of hundreds of not-for-profit organizations in New York City and across the nation. This number represents a mix of charity runners, including those registered to run the race with an official TCS New York City Marathon charity partner, those running on their own but raising money for an official charity partner, and those running on their own and using CrowdRise, the TCS New York City Marathon official fundraising partner platform, to raise money. Since the inception of the official charity partner program in 2006, $198.9 million has been raised.

NYRR’s Team for Kids, the TCS New York City Marathon’s largest charity, which raises money for NYRR’s free youth running programs, is accepting runners online. At the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon, $5.5 million was raised by 1,600 Team for Kids runners. More than 200,000 students are served locally and nationally through NYRR’s free youth running programs, events, and resources, including more than 120,000 in New York City’s five boroughs.

Runners can register to participate with one of 340 official charity partners as well as with NYRR Team for Kids. Those who have been accepted into the race can also raise money for charity—including NYRR Team for Kids, any official charity partner, or the charity of their choice—by using CrowdRise. Runners can visit www.tcsnycmarathon.org for more information on the charity partner program.

About the TCS New York City Marathon
The TCS New York City Marathon is the premier event of New York Road Runners (NYRR) and the largest marathon in the world. Over 1,000,000 people have finished the race since its first running in 1970 with just 127 entrants and 55 finishers running four laps around Central Park. The race expanded to all five boroughs in 1976 and is now in its 40th year as a five-borough affair. Held annually on the first Sunday of November, the race features 50,000 runners including the world’s top professional athletes and a vast range of competitive, recreational, and charity runners. Participants from over 125 countries tour the city, starting on Staten Island at the foot of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and running through the neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx before ending in Manhattan. In 2015, the inaugural NYRR Youth Invitational at the TCS New York City Marathon gave young runners the opportunity to run 1.8 miles of the race course in Central Park, beginning near mile 24 and finishing at the famed TCS New York City Marathon finish line. More than one million spectators and thousands of volunteers line the city streets in support of the runners, while millions more watch the live television broadcast in the New York area on WABC-TV, Channel 7, nationally on ESPN2, and via various international broadcast partners around the world. The race is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, which features the world’s top marathons—Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York—and crowns the top professional male and female marathoners each year. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a leading global IT services, consulting, and business solutions organization, is the premier partner of NYRR and the title sponsor of the TCS New York City Marathon. The 46th running of the TCS New York City Marathon is set for November 6, 2016. To learn more, visit www.tcsnycmarathon.org.
